There are so many essential missionary products that we don’t even realize we would want or need in the mission field! The goal is always to pack light and stick to the essentials, right? Well, as any returned missionary will tell you, there are some things you wish you had thrown in your suitcase just to make life a little easier, comfier, and way more fun. Whether it’s a tiny gadget, a comfort item, or just something that makes life on the mission a bit more bearable, here’s a list of seven items that would’ve been total game-changers in the mission field.

So, future missionaries (and those of you who love them), take notes! You won’t regret packing these things.

There will be a list of recommended products for each category that have been recommended by former missionaries.

1. A Small Bluetooth Speaker

Let’s be real—life on a mission can get a little… quiet sometimes. Between long study sessions, hours of walking (or biking), and maybe a little down time, having some background music could totally change the vibe of your day. A small Bluetooth speaker is a total game-changer. It’s lightweight, portable, and perfect for uplifting music during morning exercises or even just relaxing in the evening.

Picture this: you’re in the apartment after a long day, tired and a little homesick. Instead of silence, you can just press play on your favorite hymns or uplifting playlist, instantly setting a positive, peaceful atmosphere. Plus, it’s so much more fun playing sports on preparation-day with music! Trust me, it’ll be worth the space it takes up in your bag.

  2. JBL Clip 4 – Portable Mini Bluetooth Speaker

2. Sandals for the Apartment

Okay, this one is so underrated. The missionary apartments can be pretty disgusting (especially the floors). There is always hair and dirt that hangs around until the next preparation day when there is actually time to clean it. Also, the floors can get really cold in the winter, so walking around barefoot is definitely no fun.

Packing a pair of sandals for around the apartment is one of those small luxuries you didn’t know you needed until you’re a missionary. Flip-flops, slides, or comfy sandals—whatever works, but your feet will thank you. If you’re serving a mission in a colder area, bring slippers!

  2. Smile Face Slippers for Women
  3. BRONAX Pillow Slippers for Women and Men | House Slides Shower Sandals

3. A Disposable Camera

Nowadays, we can use digital phones on our missions, which is great! But the photos don’t turn out nearly as good. It is also way more fun to document fun mission experiences with your companion on a disposable camera. One of the best parts is that you have to wait to see how your pictures turn out, making it a fun surprise! When you get the photos developed on a preparation day or after your mission, it will be fun to look back at all the fun memories.

Reminder: If you’re going through airport security, make sure your film cameras don’t go through the TSA machines. Instead, pack them in your checked luggage to prevent the images from being damaged.

  2. Kodak Funsaver One Time Use Film Camera (2-pack)

4. A Polaroid Camera

One downside of a disposable camera is that you can’t reload or add more film. If you want to be able to take more photos and bring less dispo, then a Polaroid camera is the better memorable keepsake. It’s the perfect way to capture a moment and give someone something tangible to hold onto.

Whether it’s a fun picture with your companion, a sweet memory with someone you’re teaching, or a picture to send home, a Polaroid instantly gives you a snapshot of your mission that you can physically touch and keep.

6. Doc Martens Shoes

Sure, they’re not the lightest shoe, but they’re built to last—and more importantly, they’ll save your feet. You don’t want to go through multiple pairs of cheaper shoes only to spend the same amount you would have if you bought Doc Martens from the start.

Think about it: your mission is a marathon, not a sprint. You’re going to spend so much time on your feet, and having shoes that provide both comfort and durability is essential. Doc Martens are a fantastic option because they’re sturdy, stylish, and they last forever. Not to mention, they look good with just about anything—suit or casual clothes. If you’re worried about blisters, get yourself a pair of these, and your feet will thank you.

7. AirPods

Many missionaries don’t realize that AirPods are allowed in the mission field. AirPods (or any Bluetooth headphones) are a necessity. It is so nice to be able to move around your apartment while listening to music, or speaking to your family on preparation day.

Any mission device allows Bluetooth connection, so take advantage of it!

  2. Apple AirPods (2nd Generation) Wireless Ear Buds, Bluetooth Headphones

8. Bug Spray

Whether you’re serving in a tropical area or a more rural location (ESPECIALLY SOUTH AMERICA), bug spray is an essential item that many missionaries overlook until it’s too late. Mosquitoes, gnats, and other pests can make outdoor work uncomfortable and distracting. A good, DEET-based bug spray will help you stay focused on your mission without constantly swatting away bugs or dealing with itchy bites.

Protecting yourself from insects also helps reduce the risk of disease-carrying bugs, like ticks. Packing a reliable bug spray ensures you’re prepared for those outdoor moments—whether you’re tracting, serving, or just walking between appointments. It’s a small item, but it can make a significant difference in your comfort and health.

  2. BRACELET- Cliganic 10 Pack Mosquito Repellent Bracelets

9. More Tampons (or Other Period Products)

Trust me, when you’re living in a different country or area, finding your favorite brand can be tricky. Some countries don’t even sell tampons at all! The best tampons to bring are compact ones. Many brands offer expandable, click tampons.

Pro tip: pack extra tampons, pads, or whatever you use, because you never know what might be available in your mission area. The best thing about packing these is that you won’t have to travel home with them! You can swap the previous space used for tampons for souvenirs.

  2. U by Kotex Click Compact Tampons

Packing for a mission is all about balance—what’s essential for your service and what will make you feel comfortable and happy. These items may seem small, but trust me, they can make a big difference in how you feel day-to-day. Whether it’s a little comfort for your feet, a way to capture memories, or something to keep you sane, these are the things future missionaries won’t want to forget. So go ahead—pack that extra pair of sandals, bring along a stuffed animal, and maybe even throw in a Polaroid. You won’t regret it.
